There’s a moment in every individual’s life where the noise of the world fades, and one question echoes louder than all the rest: “What is my purpose?”
It’s asked by the successful executive staring out a window at midnight.
It’s asked by the college student drowning in options.
It’s asked by the parent who wonders if the daily routine is really what life is meant to be.
This question does not discriminate. It finds the young and the old, the skeptic and the believer, the dreamer and the realist. It may be the most human question of all.
Why We All Ask This Question
Science tells us that the brain is wired for meaning. Neuroscientists have found that the “default mode network”, as it is referred to, in our brains activates when we reflect on ourselves, our future, and our role in the universe. In other words, our biology is actually built to ask “Why am I here?”
Spiritual traditions across cultures confirm this same truth: the longing for purpose isn’t an accident. It’s the compass of the soul. The scriptures, the mystics, the teachers—all point back to the same place. Purpose isn’t an optional choice. It’s coded into us.
The Subconscious Mind: The Other 95%
In my book, The Other 95%: Unleashing the Power You Forgot You Had, I explain how your subconscious mind is not just background noise—it’s the hidden operating system that drives most of your life.
Here’s the stunning part: neuroscientists estimate that around 95% of our decisions, beliefs, and actions come from subconscious programming. This means that when we ask “What is my purpose?” we’re not just asking from the 5% conscious mind—we’re tapping into the deep, unspoken wisdom of the other 95% as well.
Your purpose, then, isn’t something you need to invent. It’s something you need to remember.
The Intersection of Science and Spirit
Quantum biology shows us that we are not isolated bio-adaptable organic machines, but rather interconnected energy fields that intersect for any amount of time. Every thought creates a measurable electromagnetic ripple. Every belief shapes not just your body, but the space around you also.
Spirituality has always said the same thing in different words: “As you think, so you become.” Purpose isn’t found in external validation—it’s revealed when your inner being aligns with the greater field of life instead of the false systems that have been created around us.
This is where science meets spirit. Your purpose is less about what you “do” and more about the energy and intentions you “bring” into what you do.
Why Purpose Feels Elusive
Most people struggle with purpose because they search for it in titles, achievements, or possessions. But purpose isn’t a job description. It’s not a role you check off a list.
Purpose is:
– The meaning that underlies your daily choices.
– The way your energy impacts the people around you.
– The legacy of thoughts, words, and actions that you leave behind.
When you chase purpose as an external prize or external anything, it slips away. When you cultivate it from within, it becomes undeniable in a way my words won’t help explain.
Finding Your Purpose: A Practical Path
Here are simple, but profound steps anyone can take:
1. Silence the Noise – Disconnect from constant “input”. Stillness is the doorway to clarity.
2. Listen to the Subconscious – Journal, meditate, or simply pay attention to recurring dreams and inner intuitions. That’s the other 95% speaking.
3. Look for Patterns – What makes you lose track of time? What pain in the world makes you ache? These are clues.
4. Align with Service – Purpose expands when it includes others. True fulfillment always involves impact beyond just yourself.
5. Experiment, Don’t Wait – Purpose is not one final answer. It unfolds as you live. Do, learn, adjust, repeat. Thinking about it won’t help you get anywhere…
A Personal Note
When I wrote my most recent book, The Other 95%, I didn’t set out to write just another self-help book. I needed to create a bridge between what you call science and what you call spirituality – so that it could be understood by everyone how they are the same thing in different languages, between the subconscious mind and the greater universe that surrounds you.
Because of this: once you connect with your “hidden” 95% (aka your subconscious), the question “What is my purpose?” shifts from a stress or torment into a discovery and adventure. It becomes a journey that you’re excited to live – instead of an answer you’re desperate to find.
A Viral Truth
Here’s a truth that people feel, but rarely articulate into words:
Your purpose is not lost. It’s waiting inside the part of you that has always known.
Every human has asked the question. The ones who live fulfilled and abundant lives are the ones who listen for the answer – not from outside, but from within…
* If this resonates with you at all, please share it. Someone you know may be silently asking this very question. And maybe your share is the spark that helps them remember what they were born to do.
